The Electronic Health Record

Question Description

Choose a topic from the course in which you have an interest. Apply informatics theory and content from the course modules, informed by current literature and course materials. Some possible topics include the following:

  • The Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Data Analytics/Data Mining in Healthcare IT
  • Standardized Terminologies in Documentation (SNOMED/LOINC)
  • Mobile Healthcare Information Technologies
  • Clinical Communications
  • Telehealth/Telemedicine
  • Human Technology Interface/Usability in Healthcare IT
  • Information Security
  • Roles/Competencies/Development of Nursing Informaticists
  • Patient Engagement Technologies

Theoretical framework examples include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Graves and Corcoran’s Model
  • Sciwirian’s Model
  • Turley’s Model
  • Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom (DIKW) Model
  • Sociotechnical Theory
  • Rogers’s Diffusion of Innovation Theory
  • Lewin’s Change Theory
  • Information Theory
  • General-System Theory
  • Chaos Theory

Note: The theoretical framework will serve as the underlying foundation for the paper. Here, you are to demonstrate how it may be applied to a specific nursing informatics issue.

Using that topic and the theoretical framework or model, write a paper that must be between 3750 to 6000 words (15 to 20 pages) in narrative, not including the title and reference pages. This assignment is worth 25% of the final course grade.

The paper should follow APA format and include the following sections:

  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Background
  • Body
  • Implications and conclusions with future directions
  • References (minimum 7 to 10)

Please note that this is a high level guide, but you should refer to the grading rubric for a comprehensive description of the paper requirements.

Exploration of topicYou astutely explore an essential topic from the course. You satisfactorily explore a suitable topic from the course. You loosely explore a superficial topic from the course. You incompetently explore a trivial topic from the course.nullApplication of theory or modelYou expertly apply your theoretical or model framework to your topic and develop an insightful analysis. You suitably apply your theoretical or model framework to your topic and develop a rational analysis. You haphazardly apply your theoretical or model framework to your topic and develop a cursory analysis. You carelessly apply your theoretical or model framework to your topic and develop an inept analysis.nullContent developmentYou use carefully chosen, authoritative, and compelling content that demonstrates mastery of your chosen theoretical framework; provide an advanced and thoughtful analysis of ideas; present an in-depth synthesis of ideas demonstrating insight and interpretation; and include appropriate references to readings wherever necessary. You use appropriate and relevant content that demonstrates sufficient command of your chosen theoretical framework; provide a germane analysis of ideas; and include references to readings. You use somewhat appropriate content that demonstrates limited command of your chosen theoretical framework; provide a cursory analysis of ideas that lacks insight and interpretation; and include minimal references to readings. You use inappropriate and irrelevant content regarding your chosen theoretical framework, provide little, if any, analysis, and do not include references to readings.nullOrganizationYou implement a coherent, observable organizational pattern (specific abstract, introduction, and conclusion, sequenced material within the body, and transitions) that effectively elucidates the content of the paper. You implement a generally observable organizational pattern (specific abstract, introduction, and conclusion, sequenced material within the body, and transitions) that successfully explains the content of the paper. You implement a somewhat observable organizational pattern (specific abstract, introduction, and conclusion, sequenced material within the body, and transition) that inconsistently explains the content of the paper. You implement an incoherent organizational pattern (lacking specific abstract, introduction, and conclusion, sequenced material within the body, and transition) that inadequately explains the content of the paper. nullEvidenceYou effectively support points and subpoints with abundant clarifying detail, include relevant and clearly attributed sources as necessary, and effectively link ideas; comprehensive evidence extends ideas and fully authenticates the thesis of the paper. You support points and subpoints with sufficient detail, attribute sources as necessary, and link ideas; evidence relates to the thesis of the paper. You support points and subpoints with limited detail and improperly link ideas at times; most evidence does not relate to the thesis of the paper. You inadequately support points and subpoints with irrelevant detail and do not properly link ideas; little, if any, evidence relates to the thesis of the paper. nullSources and documentationYou clearly and effectively document sources of information using in-text citations linked to more than 10 references at the end of the paper; APA format is complete and entirely accurate. You properly document sources of information using in-text citations linked to 7-10 references at the end of the paper; APA format may include a few minor errors. You incompletely document sources of information using in-text citations linked to 4-6 references at the end of the paper; APA format includes significant errors. You inadequately document sources of information using in-text citations linked to fewer than 4 references at the end of the paper; whatever documentation exists includes multiple and serious errors.nullMechanicsYou write in complete, well-constructed sentences with faultless grammar, word choice, punctuation, and spelling; writing is sharp, coherent, and demonstrates sophisticated clarity. You write in complete sentences with mostly correct grammar, word choice, punctuation, and spelling; minor errors may exist but do not compromise meaning. You write in unclear sentences with significant errors in grammar, word choice, punctuation, and spelling that may compromise meaning. You write in incomplete, incomprehensible sentences filled with serious errors in grammar, word choice, punctuation, or spelling.n
