The textbook and the power points gave you a number of statistics about various crimes. In this project, you will use several different data sets to look at crime and its relationship to various social and economic conditions in the United States.

Part I:

Question 1:

Before you begin, make a quick list of the states that you think would have the highest rates of crime.

In the first part of this data exercise you will be using data on property crime rates by state. Look at the map below which shows property crime rates by state. A lower crime rate means fewer crimes per 100000 people in that state. Then look up your own state. Remember, RATES means the number per 100,000 population, not the number of crimes. You would expect a larger number of crimes in states with more people, which is why “rate” controls for the size of the population. What are your results? Did any state on your list match the states that have the highest/lowest rates of crime? How well did you predict your own state?

Part II:

There have been various theories on crime, the most influential of which are discussed in the power point slides and in the text. While it would be difficult to fully explore each theory in a short assignment such as this, let’s look at some factors that have been explored in relation to the theories. As such for the next question, you will look at education, poverty and employment rates (three factors that might indicate the presence or absence of “blocked opportunities” discussed in the Strain Theory), incarceration rates (deterrence theory) and religion (Control Theory). Use EACH ONE of the variables above (education, poverty, unemployment, incarceration, religiousity). Do these results support or refute any theory(ies) from our text – if so, which one(s) and how? Overview

When conducting research, it is possible to move in multiple directions rather than toward a specific focal point. These multiple directions create components of the research that do not align with one another. It is particularly a problem for novice researchers. For this final assignment, it will be critical to ensure that all parts of your submission—problem statement, purpose statement, research questions, and data collection, or sampling—are aligned. This review will help lead to a focused research plan, which is more likely to be successful at addressing the research question.

One important consideration is how valid and reliable the data and collection tools are for a research plan. For reasons of expediency, researchers find a sample of a specific population because it is not possible to research an entire population. In quantitative studies, statistical formulas are used to determine the number required from the sample to ensure validity of the study results. In qualitative studies, the simple rule of 12–20 participants is accepted based on the total population. Participants must meet the criteria outlined as specific for the study. The sample comprises individuals who can represent the total population. From the data gathered, the researcher can determine causation, correlation, or inference. 

Remember, reliable data are data findings that can be repeated. In other words, the results from the data collection are consistent across different samples and time periods. Valid data are data findings that are accurate and relevant.

Summary
