A Statistical Nursing Article

A cross-sectional investigation on emotional ability, empathy, and alexithymia was conducted by Rosario and colleagues. (2019) to assess the emotional capacity of nursing students. It defines emotional intelligence as being able to be aware of and manage one’s own and other’s feelings, as well as empathy for a way of understanding the emotions of people and alexithymia being the difficulties of communicating emotions. The study aimed at evaluating emotions, empathy, and alexithymia among nursing students to determine the development and improvement of emotional intelligence in their academic work.

It was a cross-sectional study employing a representative consisting of two hundred and thirty-seven students, fifty-three males as well as a hundred eighty-four women both students in their first and third semesters of their university. The students took three tests that focused on emotional intelligence. The study employed three scales to assess the various aspects that affect emotional competence: the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Exam (SSEIT) which covered the regulation as well as manipulation of emotion. the Toronto Alexithymia scale (TAS-20) and the Jefferson Scale of Empathy -Health Professions Student Version (JSE-HPS). The tests were used to determine their psychological capabilities during nursing education.

The results of the study revealed the presence of good emotional intelligence among the students. The results overall showed that females scored higher on the SSEIT scale, which indicates that the emotional intelligence level was higher for females than for men. The empathy scale demonstrated a significant rise in the third year, indicating that male and female students’ capacity to comprehend the needs and desires of patients was enhanced throughout the study period. The results also suggest that students gained competence through the nursing curriculum. The Alexithymia scale revealed significantly higher scores among third-year nursing students, suggesting that students who had not received proper instruction in emotional care have been able to withdraw from their emotions, enabling them to deal with them better.
