To manufacture FastFoam, a new piece of machinery will be required which will cost £45,000. This will have a five year life and will have a scrap value of £3,000. The variable costs of the machine are: Materials £225 Labour £145 In addition there will be fixed costs specific to the product of £14,500 per annum and in accordance with policy, the product will be charged with 25% of direct costs to cover general fixed overheads of the business. The company’s cost of capital is 12%. Required: a) Calculate the payback period for the project. b) Calculate the internal rate of return (IRR) on the project. c) Advise the Board on whether Jardin Plc should undertake the project. Support your decision with relevant calculations (e.g. NPV and discounted payback method). d) Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the investment appraisal techniques you used in the decision-making process.
