Krabbe disease, also known as globoid cell leukodystrophy, is a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system. It is caused by a deficiency in the enzyme galactocerebrosidase, which is responsible for breaking down certain lipids, including ceramide, sphingosine, galactosphingosine, and galactosylceramide (Kumar & Dutta, 2020). As a result of this deficiency, these lipids accumulate in the body, leading to damage of the myelin sheath that surrounds and protects nerve cells.

Sphingosine and galactosphingosine have also been identified as lipids that accumulate in Krabbe disease, although to a lesser extent (Moreau et al., 2016).
